Children affected by housing instability are often denied the chance to experience the healing power of play.
In one survey of 830 U.S. mothers, 82% said crime and safety concerns kept their children from playing outdoors.
A 2024 Pediatrics study found that children with housing insecurity were more likely to report worse health at age 15, including higher depression and anxiety (Alliance for Childhood, 2010).
That is why Safe & Secure Spaces matters: With consistent case management and community support, mothers can move from crisis to stability, and children can grow, learn, and flourish.
But our properties are aging, and some repairs are urgently needed. These spaces need to be redesigned to meet current quality, safety, and accessibility standards. Your support will also help create outdoor spaces that bring joy, connection, and healing.

Where Safe & Secure Spaces Will Come to Life
Before this project, children did not have an on-site playground designed for their needs. Through Safe & Secure Spaces, Saint Louise House plans to invest in a place where children can play freely, build confidence, and experience the joy of childhood in an environment that supports safety, belonging, and healing.
We’re excited to share a playground design that focuses on safety, connection, and lasting value for the whole community, comprising of:
- Inclusive play:
The playground will include activities for children of different ages and abilities. - Safe environment:
We’re aiming for a space that supports safety, with fall-height surfacing, fencing if approved, and equipment that meets ASTM/CPSC standards. - Community gathering space:
The design will also include benches, gathering areas, and pathways that help residents connect and spend time together. - Long-term value:
We’re choosing durable surfacing and equipment so the playground can stay safe and useful for years to come. - Play is therapeutic.
