In 2012, Saint Louise House received several boxes of award winning books to distribute to our program participants through the international nonprofit, World Book Night. World Book Night is an annual celebration dedicated to spreading the love of reading, person to person. The program is about giving books and encouraging reading in those who don’t regularly do so. In 2012, World Book Night was celebrated in the U.S., the UK, Ireland and Germany.
This year, Saint Louise House is kicking off it’s first ever “Book of the Month” program thanks to the books from World Book Night. Each month, case managers will will invite Saint Louise House moms to focus on a book on which to share their experiences and insights with each other over community dinners during weekly empowerment groups. The “Book of the Month” for January is the “Book Thief” by Markus Zusak. As Heinrich Mann stated, “A house without books is like a room without windows.” Our hope is that” Book of the Month” will help our program participants develop a love for reading in their homes and deepen their sense of community.
